The last few months have been a whirlwind. With all the actions, board meetings, and victorious press conferences (!), it’s been hard to plan for summer. But here we are, sweating in our office to newly-steamy May temperatures and preparing for the onslaught of summer opportunities. Here are just a few ways to stay engaged in the climate fight and build your skills this season:
1. Get trained!
- 350.org is holding monthly Wednesday Web Workshops all summer (and for the rest of 2014) on everything from starting new divestment campaigns to our organization’s theory of change for divestment.
- Responsible Endowments Coalition is hosting a Summer Organizing Retreat in New Jersey July 28-August 2, for students to come together and discuss endowments, corporate power, and strategies for winning.
- This June 14-22 is the 10th annual Mountain Justice Summer camp. Devoted to training a broad resistance to mountaintop removal coal mining, this summer’s camp will feature 9 days of workshops, trainings, music, and films.
2. Connect with other climate organizers!
- The Divestment Student Network is continuing to hold bi-weekly assembly calls for student organizers to connect and plan on the first and third tuesday of every month.
- Look for and share summer organizing opportunities on the students-divest listserv – you can join the listserv here.
- Connect with your local 350.org group. You can find them with our handy map tool.
3. Take action!
There are more actions and convergences happening this summer than we can list here, but here are a couple of opportunities that we are particularly excited about:
- Student actions in July and August taking on Cambridge Associates, an investment consultancy firm that has been a barrier to divestment at many colleges.
- In mid-July, organizers battling the first US Tar Sands extraction site are hosting a camp for students and other young people to learn more about organizing, relationship building, direct action, and the cultivation of a climate justice analysis.
