On Friday the13th of February the Department of Earth and Life Science hosted a career day at the VU University with the presence of major fossil fuel companies.  DivestVU raised awareness about the university’s ties to fossil fuel companies by securing the area and spreading the messages: “turn around for a sustainable future” and “enter at your own risk”. Moreover DivestVU encouraged their fellow students to make a good choice for their future and not choose an industry of the past.

DivestVU believes their University has no role in financing fossil fuel companies, which it for instance does through the VU-association’s €15,- million fund. Fossil fuel producing companies are outspokenly committed to producing 5 times the amount of fossil fuels that would be save to burn to limit climate change to 2 degrees celsius. By allowing such companies to recruit top-talent from the University, they are given further legitimacy to continue destroying our planet’s future, DivestVU argues.

The career day of the Earth and Life Science department in the foyer of the main building seemed the perfect location for DivestVU to spread the message “ FOSSIL FUELS = HISTORY,  RENEWABLES = FUTURE. DIVEST! When the “business-market” opened, DivestVU positioned themselves in the area where the fossil fuel companies had placed their information stand. Five DivestVU campaigners were dressed in white overalls, protection glasses and carrying warning signs. Hereby, DivestVU showed clearly that the business model of fossil fuel companies is at collision course with our climate and demanded a clean, renewable and sustainable future. However, it seemed at first that DivestVU was confronting the organizers of the career event.  One of the organizers responded to the presence of Shell: “This is how the world is” and demanded the group to leave. Isabell Eberlein, DivestVU campaigner: “We simply cannot accept that fossil fuel companies are guaranteed such a good platform at an institution that should educate future leaders of society. And we want to change the world how it is and take away the social license from the fossil fuel companies. Our future shall be renewable”

Before the action, DivestVU had contacted about 1000 staff members of the VU, asking to spend time in lectures on the topic of divestment, and its scientific and financial underpinnings. With the so called “teach-ins”  DivestVU aims to raise more awareness of the moral and financial argument that undermines the divestment process.
The Global Divestment Day action marks a turning point for the movement working to further de-legitimize the fossil fuel industry. On February 13 and 14, hundreds of actions are held at as many institutions all around the world, including universities, municipalities and pension funds.  The truly global campaign has succeeded in sparking an increasingly high-profile debate, and some early successes, with the Norwegian pension fund having divested from coal-stocks, the Rockefeller Fund having divested from all fossil fuel stock and 180 other institutions having committed to divest from fossils.
The campaigners are confident that in 2015 they will continue to de-legitimize investments in this rogue industry, successfully moving more money out of these fossil fuel companies and into bold solutions. DivestVU is meeting the VU-association’s financial board in April, and aims to convince them to choose an investment strategy in check with the changes in our energy system, the climate and the planet’s future. Global Divestment Day will be another step in the right direction.

DivestVU waarschuwt voor gevaarlijke fossiele brandstof bedrijven tijdens “Global Divestment Day”

Op 13 en 14 februari vond Global Divestment Day plaats: twee dagen waarop wereldwijd vele mensen opriepen om niet meer te investeren in de  fossiele brandstoffen industrie, vanwege de grote ecologische en financiële  risico’s dat dit met zich meebrengt. Toevallig verzorgde de Faculteit Aard- en Levenswetenschappen op vrijdag 13 februari een carrièredag op de VU waarbij verschillende bedrijven uit deze zelfde fossiele industrie aanwezig waren, zoals Shell en GDF-Suez.  Voor de activisten van DivestVU, bood deze samenloop van omstandigheden een uitgelezen kans voor een actie.

DivestVU is een actiegroep die de VU oproept zich terug te trekken uit investeringen in de fossiele industrie maar tijdens deze loopbaandag ook studenten wilt waarschuwen om niet te kiezen voor een baan in deze industrie uit het verleden, die onze toekomst op het spel zet. DivestVU gelooft dat hun universiteit geen enkele rol zou moeten spelen in het financieren van de fossiele industrie, wat het bijvoorbeeld doet via het fonds van de VU-Vereniging, een fonds wat €15,- miljoen waard is. De fossiele industrie  is uitgesproken toegewijd aan het produceren van 5 keer de hoeveelheid fossiele brandstoffen dan redelijk veilig zou zijn om te verbranden willen we de  opwarming van de aarde binnen de twee graden celsius houden, hiermee zetten ze  de toekomst van ons en onze kinderen op het spel. Als bovendien eindelijk de noodzakelijke politieke maatregelen worden genomen om de CO2 uitstoot drastisch te verminderen, zullen deze reserves  in de grond moeten blijven, en zullen  aandeelhouders veel geld verliezen. Door in deze bedrijven te blijven investeren en ze toe te staan top talenten van onze universiteit te recruteren, wordt hen legitimiteit verschaft om verder te gaan met het vernietigen van onze toekomst. DivestVU vindt dan ook dat hier een einde aan moet komen.

De carrièredag van de Faculteit  Aard- en Levenswetenschappen vond plaats in de foyer van het hoofdgebouw, en leek daarom de perfecte locatie voor DivestVU om de boodschap “FOSSIL FUELS = HISTORY, RENEWABLES = FUTURE. DIVEST!” te verspreiden. Op het moment dat de “zakenmarkt” opende, positioneerde activisten van DivestVU zich in het “hol van de leeuw”, tussen de kraampjes van de fossiele industrie. Vijf campagnevoerders gekleed in witte overalls met mondkapjes en beschermingsbrillen lieten, gewapend met waarschuwingsborden duidelijk zien dat het businessmodel van de fossiele industrie op een ramkoers is met ons klimaat. Er werd opgeroepen tot een schone, hernieuwbare en duurzame toekomst.

Bij de organisatie van het evenement viel de actie helaas niet in de smaak. Eén vande organisatoren van het evenement  reageerde op de aanwezigheid van Shell met de woorden: “This is how the world works”, en stond erop dat de leden van DivestVU vertrokken. DivestVU activist Isabell Eberlein: “We kunnen simpelweg niet accepteren dat de fossiele industrie een plek op zo’n mooi platform gegarandeerd krijgt, binnen een instituut die de toekomstige leiders van de samenleving moet onderwijzen. We willen de wereld zoals die is veranderen en de fossiele industrie de social license ontnemen, onze toekomst zal duurzaam zijn”. De overdreven reactie van sommige VU medewerkers op de vreedzame actie wekte de indruk dat activisme niet erg welkom is binnen de universiteit, terwijl de fossiele industrie kan rekenen op een prachtig platform om een goede naam voor zichzelf te maken. Ook mochten er absoluut geen foto’s van de actie gepubliceerd worden, waarop het Shell logo te zien is, dit zou Shell namelijk niet op prijs stellen.

In aanloop naar de actie werden zo’n 1000 medewerkers van de VU door DivestVU benaderd, met de vraag of ze tijdens hun colleges wat tijd wilden spenderen aan de speerpunten van de Divest beweging en de wetenschappelijke en financiële onderbouwing erachter. Met deze zogenaamde “teach-ins” wil DivestVU meer mensen bewust maken van de morele en financiële argumenten om niet meer in de fossiele industrie te investeren.
De campagnevoerders hebben er vertrouwen in dat ze gedurende 2015 verder zullen gaan met de de-legitimering van investeringen in deze schurken-industrie, waarbij succesvol geld uit deze industrie getrokken zal worden en er meer geïnvesteerd zal worden in een duurzame toekomst. DivestVU zal in April  het financiële bestuur van de VU- Vereniging ontmoeten, en richt zich erop hen te overtuigen om te kiezen voor een investeringstrategie die rekening houdt met de veranderingen in ons energie systeem, het
