Young people are shareholders of the future. The choices of investors now have an immense impact on our lives later on. What large pension funds are doing with their money, does not have a positive influence on our future. For the first time, young people are standing up against this policy. We want to give a voice to the youth, and stand up against the unsustainable investments of pension funds.
On the 25th of June, we will start with the largest one: the ABP. Are you joining us?
For all youth
Whether you’re in high school, working, studying, saving for your retirement with ABP or with another pension fund; we, the youth, have the right to speak out against investments that are dangerous for our future. Together, we are the Shareholders of the Future.
What do we want?
- First of all, that ABP removes the €17.000.000.000 of investments from the fossil industry and gives a good example to other investors
- That the billions that ABP invests, contribute to a sustainable and just future, by investing in accordance with the 1.5 degree goal of the Paris Agreement and all Sustainable Development Goals.
- A seat in the ABP Board for the youth and representatives of future generations
Why do we want this?
- We deserve a habitable world, even in 2100 when we are retired
- In order for ABP to take their responsibility for their influence on our future
- Because all Sustainable Development Goals are related, and cannot be solved independently.
- In order for retirement funds of our education system, which is working on our future, is not invested in the past or companies that are not future-proof
- Because students are currently contributing with their tuition to the unsustainable investments of ABP.
- Because the average age of the ABP Board is 54 years
- Because a fund as big as ABP influences the future of us all, so all youth should be represented

As shareholders of the future, the youth, pupils and students, are calling for ABP to consider our future in their investment policy. That is why we want them to divest from companies who are not in line with the Agreements of Paris or the Sustainable Development Goals.
Why?
ABP manages a €500 billion pension fund of teachers, professors and officials, and a significant part of this is invested in companies who are not contributing to a habitable future. Even though ABP says they are using their influence to make companies more sustainable, they usually do not vote in favor of climate resolutions at shareholder meetings.
Time is running out to prevent disastrous climate change. That is why we call for ABP to invest in the future.

Tijd voor een fossielvrij ABP
Het duurt te lang. Sinds 2014 vragen pensioendeelnemers aan ABP met petities, open brieven en acties om te stoppen met investeren in fossiele bedrijven. Maar ABP verandert niet van koers.
Het pensioengeld van ambtenaren en docenten gaat naar fossiele bedrijven die de klimaatcrisis verergeren. Olie-, kolen- en gasreuzen zijn verantwoordelijk voor het leeuwendeel van de wereldwijde CO2-uitstoot. Door te lobbyen en te misleiden houden zij klimaatbeleid tegen. Ook gaat het pensioengeld naar bedrijven die verantwoordelijk zijn voor ontbossing, terwijl bossen broodnodig zijn voor het leefbaar houden van de aarde.
Omdat ambtenaren en docenten verplicht bij ABP zitten, worden wij tegen onze zin medeplichtig aan het verergeren van de klimaatnoodtoestand. Het is onacceptabel dat het collegegeld van studenten bijdraagt aan een onleefbare wereld. Wij roepen ABP op te divesteren uit fossiele bedrijven, en te investeren in klimaatoplossingen en met respect voor mensenrechten.
Gemeenschappen over de hele wereld komen in opstand tegen de verwoestende impact van de fossiele industrie. Maar ABP blijft investeren in kolen-, olie- en gasbedrijven met de bewering dat ze door in gesprek te gaan bedrijven kunnen aanzetten tot duurzamer gedrag. Inmiddels zijn we jaren verder, en weten we dat de fossiele reuzen niet van plan zijn om van koers te veranderen.
In plaats van in klimaatontwrichtende bedrijven te beleggen, moet ABP juist investeren in rechtvaardige klimaatoplossingen en eerlijk herstel met respect voor mensenrechten. Zo dragen we bij aan een leefbare wereld voor generaties nu en in de toekomst, wereldwijd.
We hebben geen tijd meer om te wachten. Wij kunnen ABP niet verlaten, maar ABP kan wel uit klimaatontwrichtende bedrijven stappen. ABP zou hiermee als een van de grootste pensioenfondsen op de wereld een krachtig signaal afgeven, wat anderen zullen volgen. Het zou een kantelpunt zijn om klimaatrechtvaardigheid te bereiken. En door te divesteren verlegt ABP geldstromen, waartoe het klimaatakkoord van Parijs oproept. Pensioenfondsen in New York, Zweden en Denemarken gingen ABP al voor.
