There are a handful behind the DAPL, lead by Energy Transfer Partners. Then there are the banks who financed the pipeline and remain linked to it despite calls from hundreds of thousands to cut their ties. There are seventeen <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.defunddapl.org\/contact-the-banks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there are the owners of the pipeline companies like: t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he state of New York\u2019s pension plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To the tune of about $400 million dollars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The $175 billion state pension plans helpfully and annually publish a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osc.state.ny.us\/retire\/word_and_pdf_documents\/publications\/cafr\/asset_listings_16.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full accounting of their investments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in different companies. As a shareholder, New York state\u2019s pension system partially \u2018owns\u2019 these companies. <\/span><b>And it\u2019s not too much of a stretch to say that if you partially own something, you are at least partially responsible for how that company acts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how it respects Indigenous Rights (or doesn\u2019t), how it protects water and the environment (or doesn\u2019t), how it engages with those who want the company to act differently (cue rubber bullets, tear gas, stun grenades and guard dogs).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13240\" style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DemocracyNow.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13240\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13240\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DemocracyNow-534x300.png\" alt=\"Dog at with blood on his snout after attacking water protectors - Credit: Democracy Now video\" width=\"534\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dog at protest camp with blood on his snout after attacking water protectors<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2016\/9\/6\/whos_investing_in_the_dakota_access\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 6 pipeline and infrastructure companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are part of the partnership behind the Dakota Access Pipeline. The NY State pensions own 4 of them. These aren\u2019t banks financing the project, these are the builders of the pipeline, the ones who own it and will reap the (blood) money rewards if it is profitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NY State pension plans owns:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$15 million of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/line9communities.com\/history-of-enbridge-spills\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enbridge<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$93 million of Marathon Petroleum<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$90 million of Energy Transfer Partners<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$209 million Phillips 66<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For a grand total of over $400 million dollars.<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13241\" style=\"width: 469px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/creditTonyWebster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13241\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13241\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/creditTonyWebster-459x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dakota Access Pipeline - Credit Tony Webster\" width=\"459\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dakota Access Pipeline &#8211; Credit Tony Webster<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One person is ultimately responsible for deciding the future of these investments \u2013 to keep owning the fossil fuel companies behind this pipeline (and others) or divesting and sending a message that the NY State pensions will respect Indigenous Rights and keep our waters clean. He\u2019s the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elected<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> state comptroller and his name is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nyscomptroller\/\"><b>Thomas DiNapoli<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engagement and letters to these companies or their banks ain\u2019t working.
