{"id":8337,"date":"2017-01-26T14:10:52","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T14:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/usa\/ireland-passes-fossil-fuel-divestment-bill\/"},"modified":"2017-01-27T11:52:51","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T11:52:51","slug":"ireland-passes-fossil-fuel-divestment-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/usa\/ireland-passes-fossil-fuel-divestment-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish Parliament supports historic fossil fuel divestment bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today marks an important moment in the history of the divestment movement: <strong>A majority vote was passed in the Irish Parliament on\u00a0first-of-its-kind fossil fuel divestment legislation.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ireland now has the historic opportunity to become the first country in the world to fully divest its sovereign wealth fund, worth over \u20ac8 billion, from coal, oil and gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B1L95eqaHOO_WFpkNmpmOTJGd0E\/view\">Last Thursday in the D\u00e1il<\/a>, all political parties, with the exception of Fine Gael, indicated their strong support for the Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill \u2013 a piece of legislation getting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isif.ie\/about-us\/\">Ireland&#8217;s Strategic Investment Fund<\/a> to divest from fossil fuels. Today, this bill has passed. The Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill will now go\u00a0to Committee stage in the Irish Parliament.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This success is the result of fantastic campaigning by our friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trocaire.org\/\">Tr\u00f3caire<\/a>, key members of parliament, and many people across Ireland taking action on fossil fuel divestment.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;With a climate-sceptic recently inaugurated into the White House, this move by elected representatives in Ireland will send out a powerful message.
