{"id":8297,"date":"2016-12-16T00:33:26","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T00:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/usa\/between-now-and-trump-we-must-defunddapl\/"},"modified":"2016-12-16T00:36:14","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T00:36:14","slug":"between-now-and-trump-we-must-defunddapl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/usa\/between-now-and-trump-we-must-defunddapl\/","title":{"rendered":"Between Now and Trump, We Must #DefundDAPL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 4th, the Obama Administration announced that it will not grant Energy Transfer Partners the final permit for the Dakota Access Pipeline to drill under the Missouri River, and called for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the project. This milestone is a testament to the amazing movement that indigenous leadership and the camps at Standing Rock have led, and has re-defined what is possible when thousands of people come together to peacefully resist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But the fight to stop Dakota Access isn\u2019t over &#8212; and right now, before Trump comes into office, is a critical moment.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can\u2019t say for certain what will happen when Trump\u2019s in office, and we don\u2019t know how an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/planet\/2016\/12\/whats-next-for-standing-rock-and-dakota-access-pipeline-fight\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempt to reverse this decision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will play out in the courts \u2013\u00a0so right now <\/span><b>it\u2019s crucial that we use another source of our strength to stop this project: our financial power and collective pressure.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The divestment movement has already shown the power of moving our money and rejecting the social license of the fossil fuel industry. Just this week, it was announced that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/dec\/12\/fossil-fuel-divestment-funds-double-5tn-in-a-year\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">total assets committed to divest surpass $5 trillion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now we need to turn that power and momentum to Dakota Access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dakota Access pipeline is being financed in various ways by 17 banks (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yesmagazine.org\/people-power\/how-to-contact-the-17-banks-funding-the-dakota-access-pipeline-20160929\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here\u2019s a list with contact info for each<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Thanks to the enormous pressure on the banks through direct action, letters, and people withdrawing their money, they\u2019re showing signs that they\u2019re re-considering their investments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s especially important, because on January 1st of the new year, oil companies with contracts to ship oil through the pipeline will be able to renegotiate or cancel those contracts. The more banks that waver on funding this project, the more likely that fossil fuel companies will see Dakota Access as an unviable option for bringing their products to market. Without crude oil to transport, Dakota Access becomes financially unprofitable and moot. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48580\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48580\" class=\"wp-image-48580 \" src=\"http:\/\/350.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/IMG_0803-369x400.png\" alt=\"img_0803\" width=\"323\" height=\"350\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-48580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wells Fargo agrees to meet with Tribal Elders following public pressure and people closing their accounts<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re already tipping the scale. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/indiancountrymedianetwork.com\/news\/native-news\/city-seattle-dumps-wells-fargo-dapl\/\"><b>Seattle recently cut ties with Wells Fargo<\/b><\/a><b> because of their irresponsible investment in the Dakota Access pipeline,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cities like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/minneapolis-explores-ending-its-wells-fargo-relationship-bank-responds\/405477726\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minneapolis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also taking steps toward similar action. One of the major Norwegian banks has <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/divest-dakota-access-pipeline-norway-2110373927.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already pulled funding from the project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of the pressure applied by the Sami people in Norway, and the growing global opposition to this project and fossil fuel infrastructure writ large. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Throughout December organizers at Standing Rock have called for a global month of action to target the banks and divest from the Dakota Access pipeline.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Through shifting investments and putting pressure on lending banks, we can put a permanent stop to this pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.defunddapl.org\/\"><b>Help defeat the black snake for good \u2013 divest from Dakota Access (including the companies and the financing banks), send a letter, and take action. <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To join the December month of action, check out the following links:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Divest. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our friends at Yes! As per the terms of the loan, Dakota Access could only access $1.1 billion immediately &#8212; the other $1.4 billion would not become available until the pipeline received the appropriate permits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Citibank, TD Securities, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, and Mizuho Bank were to hold back the remaining $1.4 billion, the cash for the pipeline could dry up and the project could come grinding to a potentially permanent halt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-48582\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/350japan-standignrock-475x400.jpg\" alt=\"350japan-standignrock\" width=\"379\" height=\"319\" \/>Our friends at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/world.350.org\/ja\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">350.org Japan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Greenpeace held a demonstration in Tokyo after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0BzOm8egPH8N8Z3VNc0dMWmpmbFU\/view\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sending this letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demanding that Japan&#8217;s major banks\u2014including Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and Mizuho Bank\u2014immediately divest from the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other two major banks, Citibank and TD Bank, have a large presence in North America. \u00a0Their customers need to know what these banks are supporting and their executives should be warned that we\u2019ll disrupt business as usual until they withdraw their funds for the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>That\u2019s why your help to #DefundDAPL is more important than ever. \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>P.S.
