No, big does not begin to describe what&#8217;s at play here. It&#8217;s something huge. The people proved that\u00a0not only does the divestment movement have legs&#8230;but it&#8217;s running full speed at a faster pace than the fossil fuel industry can keep up with.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That&#8217;s why we are putting these digests out there, to capture the five big community\u00a0stories, the five big campus stories, five emerging petitions, and our new addition originally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eenews.net\/stories\/1060010496\">performed by\u00a0activists&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0in Lima, Peru<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; the fossil of the month award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now without further ado&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #81919b;\">Here are the five global campuses calling us to action:<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #81919b;\"><strong>1. USA:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>Who wrote the one invitation that no one can or should refuse?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students driving\u00a0the divestment movement invited their peers from across North America to join them in the fight to divest from Fossil Fuels for Global Divestment Day (February 13, 2015).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What did the invitation say? <\/strong>Here\u2019s a summary, but to read the whole thing,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/this-is-what-an-invitation-looks-like\/\">click here<\/a> <\/strong>\u201c.. .Over the next few months, we\u2019ll gather our allies and craft action plans for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/usa\/building-towards-strategic-escalation\/\"><strong>strategic escalation<\/strong><\/a>\u2013intentionally ramping our efforts up to block business as usual and demand climate justice. On February 13th, we will hold rallies, vigils, and press conferences announcing our intention to escalate in late March and April. \u00a0While our administrations might be afraid to take bold action on climate, we won\u2019t be. SWEDEN:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>Who is making history in Sweden?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students! Students at J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping University in Sweden fought a year-long battle to make their university accountable\u2026and they had a victory! The victory was that the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>students pressured J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping University to exclude all direct investments in fossil fuels from its investment policy. This is a first step towards the university\u2019s aim to rid itself of all investments in fossil fuel companies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Do they have a petition?: <\/strong>Why yes they do! <a href=\"http:\/\/campaigns.gofossilfree.org\/petitions\/fossil-free-jonkoping-university-1\">Follow their story here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Actually, students across Sweden are doing what? <\/strong>Students are\u00a0driving a nationwide movement beyond J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping University. In December,\u00a0Students gathered outside Lund University\u2019s board meeting on December demanding their institution ditches its fossil fuel holdings, following a week of divestment action on campus (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/350org\/sets\/72157647397922933\/\">photos<\/a>). The protestors are backed by about 1,800 who signed on to Fossil Free LU\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Check out this brilliant quote: <\/strong>\u201cThere is a ridiculous irony that whilst investing in fossil fuels, Lund University funds research and education that recognizes fossil fuels as the number one cause in climate change. We know from an assessment report that the risk of loss from divestment is 0%. THE MARSHALL ISLANDS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>Who became the <\/strong><strong>first college in the Pacific Islands to divest from fossil fuels?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The College of the Marshall Islands! In December,\u00a0the Board of Regents of the College of the Marshall Islands unanimously approved divesting the college\u2019s endowments funds from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What does a revolution sound like?<\/strong> President Carl Hacker said this, \u201cThe Pacific region has to be a leading voice in raising this awareness and do whatever we can in our own home islands to walk the talk of divestment of fossil fuels and climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>This, is a very good point: <\/strong>Responding to the news,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/350.org\/\"><strong>350.org<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0UK Divestment Campaigner Danielle Paffard said: \u201cYet here is a university in one of the most climate change exposed countries in the world, who has contributed the least to the problem, showing real climate leadership by divesting from the industry driving the climate crisis. In December, the fossil free movement was named #39 on <em>The Australian&#8217;s Higher Education <\/em>50 most influential people list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ACE! What landed them this honor? Here is a direct quote from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/13efaai\">online publication<\/a>: \u201c<\/strong>Vested interests might have tried to undermine the fossil-free movement over ANU\u2019s decision to divest $16m in fossil-fuel share holdings, but take a look overseas and all the evidence points to the fact that this movement is here for a long haul \u2014 and they are\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0going to be intimidated by the status quo. Expect to see much more of FFM in 2015 and beyond. USA:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>Who became the very first public university to fully divest from fossil fuels?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CA State University in Chico \u00a0became an environmental pioneer in the battle against fossil fuels this December when it declared its commitment to full fossil fuel divestment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Wait, what does full divestment mean? <\/strong>Of the 23 CSUs, CSU Chico is the third CSU to create a divestment policy, along with San Francisco State and Humboldt State. While CSU Chico has no direct investments in fossil fuel companies, approximately 1.5 percent of the foundation\u2019s endowment is invested in mutual funds containing stock from the top 200 fossil fuel companies. Full divestment means moving investments out of those funds too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>How did they do it?! \u00a0<\/strong>Kevin Killion, a student leader at Chico State University and Operating Team Chair with the <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainabilitycoalition.org\/\"><strong>CA Student Sustainability Coalition<\/strong><\/a> tells all:\u00a0&#8220;This has been an inspiring experience working with youth leaders across the nation and state to demand, and win, fossil fuel divestment. Our campaign over the past year and a half was strongly supported by the Chico student government, who worked hard to bring this proposal to the Foundation after seeing strong student engagement. The petition &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/campaigns.gofossilfree.org\/petitions\/divest-canberra-from-fossil-fuels\">ACT Divestment\u00a0<\/a>\u2013 is a short and simple\u00a0call for ACT to divest. But the reaction it has gotten has been huge. USA:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>Ever heard of a divestment-blocker?\u00a0<\/strong><strong>San Francisco has one, and the people are investigating why. \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The City of San Francisco is investigating divestment-blocking city pension board member Wendy Paskin-Jordan.\u00a0Here is a summary from\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/san-francisco-lawmakers-delay-vote-former-first-ladys-role-pension-official-1760656\" target=\"_blank\">International Business Times<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 \u201cSan Francisco supervisors <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1653965340\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Tuesday<\/span><\/span> declined to approve the reappointment of the city\u2019s former first lady to the city\u2019s retirement board, citing concerns about her personal investments.
