Nobel Foundation urged to stop financing climate change

As this year’s Nobel laureates are announced this week, the newly formed climate campaign group Divest Nobel launched, calling on the Nobel Foundation to divest from coal, gas and oil companies.

– We love the work the Nobel Foundation does in lifting the greatest achievements of mankind into the public consciousness. That’s why we don’t want Nobel to finance climate change, says Andrew Maunder from Divest Nobel.

As one example the Nobel Foundation currently has investments in Exxon, one of the highest carbon emitting companies on this planet. This company lobbies to block or weaken the measure which are needed to combat climate change, and is known to actively spread disinformation on the subject.

– The Nobel Foundation now has the chance to help change the world itself. A divestment of the Nobel fortune would send a clear signal to institutions around the world that it is time to cut financial ties with the fossil fuel industry, says Andrew Maunder.

Divest Nobel is part of the international Fossil Free movement, that made capitols like Stockholm, Oslo and Berlin divest. Among other well-known institutions that divested are the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the World Council of Churches and the British Medical Association.
