New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, the sole custodian of the Fund, has so far refused to divest from fossil fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fund serves as the retirement fund for more than 1 million New Yorkers and its oil and gas holdings have left it overexposed to the precipitous drop in energy stocks over the last week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While government stimulus may trigger a slight rebound in the coming days, most analysts agree the overall outlook for the sector is dim. CNBC\u2019s Jim Cramer has gone so far as to talk about the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/31\/cramer-sees-oil-stocks-in-the-death-knell-phase-says-new-tobacco.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death knell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d of the entire industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">350.org\u2019s preliminary analysis looked at the Fund\u2019s publicly disclosed oil and gas holdings focusing on its significant tar sands holdings and top fracking companies. It is reasonable to assume that the damage is far more widespread across the Fund\u2019s full fossil fuel holdings and the Fund is likely down billions of dollars across the entire fossil fuel sector this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fund has more than $13 billion invested in fossil fuel companies. Many oil majors in its holdings were <strong>down double digits<\/strong> this week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Oil majors in the New York State&#8217;s pension fund\u2019s holdings are \u2b07\ufe0f:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mDUH6NbuG9\">https:\/\/t.co\/mDUH6NbuG9<\/a> analysis shows the state fund&#8217;s losses on fossil fuels of over $850 mil this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oyXAw5F5jX\">https:\/\/t.co\/oyXAw5F5jX<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DivestNY?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DivestNY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conoco -25% \u2b07\ufe0f<br \/>\nBP -19% \u2b07\ufe0f<br \/>\nShell -18% \u2b07\ufe0f<br \/>\nChevron -15% \u2b07\ufe0f<br \/>\nExxon -12%. \u2b07\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mIk8ly2Ab9\">pic.twitter.com\/mIk8ly2Ab9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 350 dot org (@350) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/350\/status\/1238174149417136129?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 12, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The value of the fund\u2019s holdings in ExxonMobil, a company the New York State Attorney General sued for allegedly misleading its shareholders about the risks of climate change, has dropped by more than $400 million since March 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fund has more than $2.5 billion invested in just 11 tar sands majors and these are all down double digits as well, with their total value dropping by over $860 million in the past year. \u00a0 If the price of oil stays low, many of these companies face increased risks and potentially bankruptcy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CEOs of oil companies are calling it a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/commodities\/energy\/companies-bank-lines-will-be-cut-oilpatch-pummelled-as-oil-price-crash-raises-fears-of-job-losses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bloodbath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. \u00a0<em>Financial Post, 9 March 2020<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major US gas fracking companies such as Apache, Chesapeake, Devon and Noble are all down 30-55%. NYSCRF\u2019s investment in Apache, valued at $62 million a year ago, is now worth less than $17 million. The company dropped by 54% just on Monday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collapse of the Fund\u2019s oil and gas holdings isn\u2019t surprising given the sector\u2019s overall poor performance. Last year, S&amp;P 500 Energy companies were down 44% while the rest of the S&amp;P 500 rose by 2%. That\u2019s a 46% difference in performance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A performance comparison between S&amp;P 500 Energy Companies and the rest of the S&amp;P 500\u00a0 over the last year is revealing:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118473\" style=\"width: 833px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118473\" class=\"size-full wp-image-118473\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/sp5001year.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"823\" height=\"814\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-118473\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1 year performance of S&amp;P 500 Energy companies vs all other S&amp;P 500 companies.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Divest now<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fossil fuel divestment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advocates have warned Comptroller DiNapoli about the financial as well as climate risks of continuing to invest in oil, gas, and coal companies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporateknights.com\/channels\/climate-and-carbon\/divestment-made-ny-pension-fund-22b-richer-15386364\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2018 study by Corporate Knights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that the Fund would be an estimated $22.2 billion richer if it had decided to divest its fossil fuel stocks ten years ago. Since that study has been released, pension fund holders have missed out on hundreds of millions of dollars more of potential gains because of Comptroller DiNapoli\u2019s refusal to change course.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These numbers help explain why the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/liz-krueger\/krueger-and-ortiz-introduce-updated-fossil-fuel-divestment-act\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fossil Fuel Divestment Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the New York State legislature has gained such momentum in recent weeks. The act now has 31 Senate supporters, one away from a majority, and 45 Assembly Member supporters.
