{"id":49963,"date":"2019-01-10T19:12:05","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T19:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/?p=49963"},"modified":"2019-01-10T19:24:45","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T19:24:45","slug":"6-ways-fossil-free-ny-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/6-ways-fossil-free-ny-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"6 ways New Yorkers stood up for a Fossil Free world in 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year ago today, New York\u2019s climate movement scored a milestone victory: after years of pressure from climate activists, community organizations and frontline communities, New York City declared it would divest it\u2019s $200 billion public pension funds from fossil fuels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the leadership of Mayor Bill de Blasio, Comptroller Scott Stringer, and then-Public Advocate Letitia James, the City took a major step towards standing up to fossil fuel billionaires for the climate chaos they\u2019ve caused. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And our city&#8217;s historic climate commitments didn&#8217;t stop with divestment: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/new-york-city-sues-big-oil-companies_us_5a564c62e4b03bc4d03d4de8\">New York is also taking five major oil companies to court<\/a> for the climate damage they&#8217;ve caused \u2013 including the flooding and destruction from Superstorm Sandy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, in 2019, our movement is more determined than ever to make New York a real leader on climate. There\u2019s no new demand for risky fracked gas \u2014 especially if the city is serious about its commitment to building out renewables and reducing demand for dirty fossil fuels \u2014 and construction of the pipeline would stir up dangerous industrial toxins from the seafloor of the harbor, endangering surrounding communities, local wildlife, and recreational beachgoers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community members have been hard at work to stop the construction of this risky gas pipeline. So far, over 4,500 people have signed a petition telling Gov. New York is no exception. <strong>In 2018, New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Environmental Committee Chair Costa Constantinides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/nyc-climate-bill_us_5c070847e4b0680a7ec9eea7\">introduced a bill to slash big building emissions<\/a> 80% by 2050, while delivering green jobs and protecting renters at the same time.<\/strong>\u00a0Right now, just 2% of NYC buildings account for 50% of the city\u2019s entire carbon pollution.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People rising in the streets taking action<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September, hundreds of thousands people marched across the world for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/sep\/08\/rise-for-climate-protests-san-francisco-new-york\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rise for Climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <strong>In New York City, 3000 people turned out in September 6 while 2000 more marched in a dozen actions across the state.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The march was more than a movement flexing our muscles. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rise for Climate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delivered results: the day before the action, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer announced his opposition to the Williams pipeline. Just days later, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Comptroller announced $4 billion of the city\u2019s pension funds would be invested \u00a0into climate solutions.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuomo didn\u2019t deliver on the demands from Rise NY, but that didn\u2019t stop the Rise 10 from blocking his NYC office the day afterwards. <a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/we-just-had-our-day-in-court\/\">You can read more about their story here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rise for Climate wasn\u2019t the only march that rocked New York in 2018.<\/strong> On April 23, 2000 people descended on Albany to demand Cuomo walk the talk on climate and commit to a Fossil Free New York. 55 people were arrested in the largest climate action in Albany&#8217;s history Watch the video below to learn more:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 3px solid #EEE;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iFmoMhVb6iw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#DivestNY sets its sights on the State Comptroller <\/span><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/04\/13452254585_58fa1a7bb1_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49727 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/04\/13452254585_58fa1a7bb1_z-452x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/04\/13452254585_58fa1a7bb1_z-452x300.jpg 452w, https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/04\/13452254585_58fa1a7bb1_z-430x286.jpg 430w, https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/04\/13452254585_58fa1a7bb1_z-20x13.jpg 20w, https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/04\/13452254585_58fa1a7bb1_z.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nAt the start of 2018, Governor Cuomo called on NY State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli to divest the state\u2019s public pension fund from fossil fuels. One year later, DiNapoli has held a firm line in refusing to divest, opting instead for a strategy of \u201cshareholder engagement\u201d to get companies like Exxon to behave better. Surprise: it hasn\u2019t worked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, DiNapoli\u2019s former chief investment officer, one of divestment\u2019s most outspoken opponents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/story\/ny-pension-chief-cashes-natural-gas\/\">left her job for a cushy $300,000 position at Williams<\/a>\u2014the company building the Williams fracked gas pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Activists have been hard at work building pressure on DiNapoli to see reason and #DivestNY. Expect to hear more in the year to come as the situation escalates.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State level corruption is just one more reason to oppose the Williams pipeline. If you didn\u2019t sign the petition asking Cuomo to block its construction yet, do so below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/petitions\/tell-governor-cuomo-to-stop-the-williams-pipeline-in-the-nynj-harbor-ny-2?source=350\">Sign here to stop the Williams pipeline<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exxon lawsuit filed in NY Superior Court<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a multi-year investigation, former state Attorney General Barbara Underwood filed a lawsuit against the oil and gas behemoth ExxonMobil, arguing that the company defrauded shareholders by not accounting for the costs of climate change. We stand by current Attorney General Letitia James in carrying this suit forward. It\u2019s up to all of us to hold corporate polluters accountable for years of climate deception. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2018\/10\/new-york-exxon-mobil-lawsuit-climate-change.html\"><strong>You can read more about the lawsuit here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Divestment moves forward in NYC and accelerates globally<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After its divestment announcement a year ago, NYC has taken real steps to turn that commitment into action. They started a process to hire experts to devise a detailed multiyear divestment plan. NYC followed up by putting money where it counts, announcing $4 billion in investments in climate solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Building on the momentum in NYC, a Divestment forum of global cities was announced in September joining the likes of NYC, London, Paris, Oslo, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and San Jose to work together to advance divestment from fossil fuels.
