ADVISORY: Heat Pumps Not Pipelines Rally & Letter Delivery

Albany, NY — New Yorkers from across the state will rally outside of National Grid’s ‘80×50 Pathway Forum’ in Albany to call on Governor Cuomo to hold the gas utilities –  National Grid, ConEd, NYSEG, RG&E and National Fuel – accountable and halt gas expansion. Rally and speakers will be followed by a postcard and letter delivery to Governor Cuomo’s office.

The rally will come just 3 days before Governor Cuomo and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation must make a decision on the proposed Williams NESE fracked gas pipeline, which both National Grid and ConEd are advocating for despite a report proving there’s no need for the gas.

WHEN: TODAY, Monday, May 13 (Rally at 11:30am followed by letter and postcard delivery to Governor Cuomo’s office)

WHERE: Albany Capital Center, 55 Eagle Street, Albany, New York 12207

WHO: State Senator Jen Metzger (SD42), Aaron Mair, Former Sierra Club President, and speakers from the Renewable Heat Now Campaign and Stop the Williams Pipeline Coalition.

WHY: All across New York, corporate utilities like National Grid are circumventing the State’s climate goals by pushing proposals for gas expansion at ratepayers’ expense. Any buildout of fracked gas infrastructure accelerates climate change and threatens the health, safety, and future of all New Yorkers.

Advocates are calling on New York to take immediate steps to halt gas expansion in order to avoid saddling ratepayers with stranded fossil fuel assets. They are urging Governor Cuomo to show the same kind of leadership the state showed in response to Consolidated Edison’s gas moratorium announcement in Westchester by increasing the focus and investment in energy efficiency and heat pumps across New York.
