FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28: NYC Youth strike for Green New Deal, fossil fuel divestment

MANHATTAN, N.Y. – On Friday, February 28th, Fridays For Future – NYC will join hundreds across New York in a statewide youth climate strike organized by the New York Youth Climate Leaders, a policy-driven coalition of over 50 youth organizations from across NY. These youth call for the implementation of a Green New Deal for New York State.

Specifically, a Green New Deal for NYS would include the allocation of one billion dollars in this year’s state budget to address the climate crisis, the passage of the Climate and Community Investment Act, which would ensure a rapid and just transition off of fossil fuels, the passage of the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act, which would divest the state’s Common Retirement Fund away from the fossil fuel industry, and the halting of the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure in New York. Five New York politicians have signed onto the New York Youth Climate Leaders’ Green New Deal pledge, including Brooklyn politicians Assistant Speaker of the Assembly Félix Ortiz (D-51) and Assemblyman Walter Mosley (D-57).

In addition to Manhattan, strikes are being organized on Long Island, Rochester, Buffalo, and Kingston by youth who will be joined by adult allies as they march against the continued government inaction on the climate crisis.
