{"id":146304,"date":"2023-06-13T18:15:44","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T16:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/nl\/?p=146304"},"modified":"2024-09-20T10:53:25","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T08:53:25","slug":"ing-taken-to-task-for-misleading-greenwashing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/nl\/ing-taken-to-task-for-misleading-greenwashing\/","title":{"rendered":"ING taken to task for misleading greenwashing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <a class=\"western\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4ieBuovikLQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video <\/a><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2013 \u2018H<\/span>ow we take action to fight climate change<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019 \u2013 ING <\/span>gives the impression of doing everything possible to stop the <span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2018<\/span>speeding train<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019<\/span> of the climate crisis. In doing so, ING forgets to mention that the bank is still pouring $5-11 billion a year into fossil <span lang=\"en-GB\">fuel <\/span>companies and projects, thereby actually fuelling the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gofossilfree.org\/nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2023\/05\/Uitspraak-in-dossier-2023-00116-alles-weggestreept.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Commission <span lang=\"en-GB\">ruled <\/span><\/a>that ING<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019<\/span>s claims are so absolute (<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201c<\/span>We finance billions of euros of green projects and companies around the world<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201d<\/span>) that the average consumer <span lang=\"en-GB\">would<\/span> not expect ING to <span lang=\"en-GB\">be still <\/span>putting billions into fossil <span lang=\"en-GB\">fuel <\/span>projects and companies in addition to <span lang=\"en-GB\">their <\/span>sustainable financing.<\/p>\n<p>The RCC also agree<span lang=\"en-GB\">d<\/span> with us that essential information<span lang=\"en-GB\"> \u2013 which <\/span>consumers need to get a real picture of ING<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019<\/span>s climate policy<span lang=\"en-GB\"> \u2013 was omitted. <\/span>By only <span lang=\"en-GB\">mentioning<\/span> green projects and <span lang=\"en-GB\">not including<\/span> information about fossil<span lang=\"en-GB\"> fuel<\/span> funding, viewers get a far too green <span lang=\"en-GB\">impression of ING<\/span> and cannot make an informed decision about whether or not to bank with ING.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>A new <\/b><\/span><b>complaint<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Due <\/span>to our pressure<span lang=\"en-GB\">,<\/span> ING has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ing.com\/Sustainability\/Sustainable-business\/Climate-action.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> meanwhile <\/span>changed the video<\/a><span lang=\"en-GB\">; the voiceover <\/span>now says that it also finances things that are <span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2018<\/span>not green<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019<\/span>. <span lang=\"en-GB\">The <\/span>new text is: <span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201c<\/span>ING finances today<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019<\/span>s society, which means, yes, we do finance things that aren<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019<\/span>t green, but we also finance billions of euros of green projects and companies around the world.<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201d <\/span>But this is still misleading, which is why we are going to file a new complaint.<\/p>\n<p>By <span lang=\"en-GB\">putting<\/span> money into new fossil <span lang=\"en-GB\">fuel <\/span>infrastructure now, ING is not funding the present, but our future dependence<span lang=\"en-GB\"> on<\/span> fossil <span lang=\"en-GB\">fuels<\/span>. To recoup that <span lang=\"en-GB\">investment into today\u2019s <\/span>fossil<span lang=\"en-GB\"> fuel<\/span> infrastructure<span lang=\"en-GB\">,<\/span> <span lang=\"en-GB\">and <\/span>make a profit on it, oil and gas will have to be sold for decades to come. Thus, this kind of financing shackles us to a fossil <span lang=\"en-GB\">fuel <\/span>economy, while the IPCC<span lang=\"en-GB\"> has<\/span> clearly<span lang=\"en-GB\"> demonstrated<\/span> that existing fossil <span lang=\"en-GB\">fuel <\/span>projects will emit more than we can afford to stay below 1.5\u00b0C heating. Just last month, the bank put \u20ac325 million into a<a href=\"https:\/\/pointer.kro-ncrv.nl\/vloeibaar-gas-is-niet-veel-schoner-dan-steenkool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> polluting LNG terminal<\/a> in Port Arthur, Texas. This terminal will not\u00a0be up and running until 2027. <span lang=\"en-GB\">This is <\/span>not financing today<span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2019<\/span>s society, but future climate disasters.<\/p>\n<p><b>International movement<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2022\/oct\/19\/watchdog-bans-hsbc-ads-green-cop26-climate-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British bank HSBC<\/a> was already taken to task last year for a similar greenwashing campaign. While they made a nice show of their green financing, they said nothing about the billions the bank pumps into oil, coal and gas. The UK advertising watchdog ruled that customers would not expect HSBC to also fund companies that are actually driving climate disruption.<\/p>\n<p><b>Honest video<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">We have <\/span>made <span lang=\"en-GB\">a new \u2018honest\u2019 <\/span>version of <span lang=\"en-GB\">ING\u2019s <\/span>video: <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-J4xF72fGXc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ING Bank\u2019s advertising video extoling the merits of their climate policy is misleading.
