Loud, clear and huge: 12-meter long message to “End the fossil fuel age now” fills the Van Gogh Museum.

Press release by Fossil Free Culture NL

Amsterdam June 9, 2018 – ‘If it is wrong to wreck the climate, then is wrong to accept money from those who wreck the climate’. This is the message behind the biggest and boldest performance to date, of the artist collective Fossil Free Culture NL in the Van Gogh Museum. The artists hung a 12-meter high text installation that read “End of fossil fuel age now”, urging the museum to cut their ties with Shell. The collective also presented its manifesto, which is an appeal to all cultural institutions in the Netherlands that accept money from the fossil industry to immediately break the ties with them.

Fossil Free Culture NL is convinced that artists, cultural workers and institutions play a crucial role in countering the climate crisis and is doing so by exposing the economic ties that cultural institutions have with companies like Shell.

Maria Rietbergen of Fossil Free culture NL: “More and more people are aware now that Shell is responsible for twice as much CO2 emissions than all Dutch citizens together. However, Shell has just indicated that it does not want to meet the demands of Milieudefensie to combat climate change, upon which the environmental organisation announced to take Shell to court. Shell’s major shareholders have recently rejected the climate resolution of ‘Follow This’ requesting the company to set targets that are aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2°C. This is absolutely unacceptable. The climate crisis is the most significant existential crisis that humanity has ever consciously faced. The cultural sector must stop being an accomplice and simply stop accepting funds from Shell. Therefore: Van Gogh Museum, drop Shell!”

Around 14:00 one of the approximately 35 performers of Fossil Free Culture NL took the floor on the monumental staircase of the Van Gogh Museum’s main building. While she was reciting the manifest, other performers had long paper banners hanging down from the balustrades one by one. Only after the declamation of the manifesto finished, the text was legible: END THE FOSSIL FUEL AGE NOW. The typographic work of artists such as Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer inspired the presentation of the manifesto. Fossil Free Culture NL artists combined this with the ‘banner-drop’ tactic frequently used by activists.

This spring, Fossil Free Culture NL created an ‘Art Storm’ – delivering three new performances in six weeks.

“We organised this Art Storm to demonstrate our commitment and capacity to keep bringing beautiful trouble to the Van Gogh Museum until they cut ties with Shell,” says Maria Rietbergen.

Many other cities in the world have used these tactics in other art institutions with positive divestments, such as in London, Paris and New York.
