It all started with an idea during the European Summer Divestment Training in Germany. Having all seen the US students’ video of “Divest it like it’s hot“, 32 divestment campaigners from across Europe started thinking “We need our own divestment song!”.
We decided to co-create a music video that would help spread the fossil fuel divestment movement all across Europe and beyond. We wrote lyrics, shot some footage and got some music producers and incredible musicians involved for free!
But that was just the beginning. For the final video we’re inviting your videos and photos from across Europe to help us make ‘Divest This’ go viral. We want it to show the true scale and beauty of our movement.
Here’s a teaser video of ‘Divest This’ by The Fossil Free Europe Gang, and below you’ll find everything you need to star in the final video yourself.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
How are your rapping skills? We’re looking for photos and/or video clips from iconic European locations and divestment campaign targets. Your clips will be integrated into the final Divest This video* before it’s released to the global Fossil Free movement!
Step 1 – Get ‘Divest This’
Download the “Divest This’ lyrics and audio file. Listen to the song, learn the words and get practicing your rapping and dance moves!
Step 2 – Plan your contribution
Get a group together to plan your ‘Divest This’ video/photo contribution or plan a solo effort – we want it all. We’d love it if you could shoot it either:
- at a typical location of your country which is recognizable for anyone in Europe eg. a windmill or the Eiffel Tower etc.
- in front of a recognisable campaign target eg. your town hall, your university’s iconic building or a coal power plant.
The song features 4 characters (a fossil fuel investor, a student, a climate scientist, a divestment campaigner) so think about how you could represent these in your videos. Or you could just choose to show us your best dance moves!
Step 3 – Shoot your own ‘Divest This’
Shoot your video or photos. Anyone can dress up and rap a verse in the video. Be as creative as you want to be! Use props, do a crazy dance routine or just keep it really simple… it’s up to you. Just remember to have lots of fun!
Try to make your video or photos as high resolution as possible, but you don’t need to have access to professional filmmaking equipment to take part.
Step 4 – Submit your photos and video
You have until 7 September 2014 to produce and submit your videos and photos*. We suggest you use a service like wetransfer.com or Dropbox to email a link to your downloadable video/photos to olivia@350.org. Please ensure that your contributions are as high resolution as possible but do not exceed 2GB. You must also include your name, email address, city and details of any divestment campaign you are affiliated with.
